DISCOVERING

The villages of Masua and Nebida

The coast near the two villages is made up of metalliferous rocks with a particular purple color, in stark contrast to the whiteness of the three limestone islets called S’Agusteri (the one to the north and the one in the center) and Il Morto (the southern one, larger), emerging from the overlooking sea. The view is then closed by the cliffs of Mount Nai, from which the splendid stack of the Pan di Zucchero came off in remote geological eras.

This is certainly one of the most spectacular corners of all the Sardinian coasts; the islet emerges from the sea for 132 meters, being therefore as high as the dome of the church of St. Peter in Rome. The whole area is made up of metalliferous limestone; In the past, numerous mines worked there: even today you can admire the extraordinary one of Porto Flavia, with an entrance located in the middle of the wall, many tens of meters above sea level. Even the Pan di Zucchero was once the object of mining research and exploitation, as evidenced by some remains of ladders and cables for transporting the mineral; another peculiarity is given by two rock arches, passable by boat, which open on the north and south sides of the islet.
