San Pietro Island

One of the most original and unexpected features of all the Sardinian coasts is certainly the one we find on the island of San Pietro, of which, however, the particular origin of the inhabitants (Genoese, but arrived in 1738 from the island of Tabarka in Tunisia should also be highlighted ) and the very pleasant urban imprint of the town-capital (Carloforte).

DISCOVERING

The island of San Pietro

The island of San Pietro A long series of phenomena linked to the volcanism of ancient geological eras has therefore determined the particular morphological conformation of the northern part of the island, where the coves of Cala Lunga and Cala di Mamerosso are to be mentioned, with their high walls of red trachytic rock; the vast entrance to the Grotta delle Oche, so deep that it can be visited by boat; the Tacche Bianche, large banks of clear volcanic tuffs; and the splendid Cala Vinagra, with the islet of the same name and the well-sheltered inlet, scattered with rocks and large rounded pebbles.

Cala Fico, on the other hand, is located at the north-western end of the island of San Pietro, and is certainly the most beautiful. Limited by high and steep walls, it is quite extensive. The rocks are the result of the erosive phenomena of water and wind on the soft gray trachytes, which also form the vast group of rugged hills of the hinterland, scattered with groves of Aleppo pines and pierced by mines, especially ocher and manganese , abandoned after World War II.
